Key points
  1. Blizzard nerfs Boss Powers ahead of the Diablo 4 Season 8 launch, cutting damage and adding cooldowns.
  2. Crowd control perks such as Stun and Freeze were quietly reduced or removed across multiple Uniques and Aspects.
  3. Buffs aim to revive the Spiritborn class after its Season 7 decline; sweeping balance changes hit all classes.

Blizzard has released the final patch notes for Diablo 4 Patch 2.2.0, confirming major nerfs to the new Boss Powers mechanic a day before the launch of Season 8 on April 29. Based on feedback from the public test realm (PTR), Blizzard has reduced damage values, increased cooldowns, and adjusted functionality for several Boss Powers across the game.

Boss Powers, which allow players to use abilities inspired by endgame bosses, have been significantly rebalanced. Several effects tested during the PTR now have lower damage output, shorter durations and added cooldown restrictions.

Another notable change in Patch 2.2.0 is the quiet removal or reworking of several crowd control perks from key Unique items. Blizzard has reduced the emphasis on effects such as Stun, Freeze and Daze across multiple classes and Legendary aspects, suggesting a shift away from crowd control-heavy builds in favor of more damage-focused or mobility-driven playstyles.

Patch 2.2.0 also introduces sweeping balance changes across all classes and game systems. Barbarians received notable buffs to Whirlwind builds, Druids saw improvements to Storm Strike and Cyclone Armor, and Necromancers’ Blood Lance and Blood Wave abilities were adjusted for better consistency. Meanwhile, Rogues and Sorcerers received critical updates to trap mechanics and ice magic, respectively. Additionally, Blizzard appears to be trying to salvage Spiritborn, the class introduced in Vessel of Hatred. After dominating the meta in its debut, Spiritborn fell into near irrelevance during Season 7, and the latest patch introduces major buffs and mechanical changes aimed at making the class viable again.

Blizzard has also increased the difficulty of major bosses such as Duriel, Lord Zir and Grigoire, adding new mechanics and scaling their damage. The controversial Conduit Shrines have been disabled indefinitely pending a rework.

In addition, the patch overhauls the Lair Boss system. Bosses will now drop loot chests requiring Hoard Keys to open, with changes to summon mechanics and loot tables aimed at creating a more balanced late-game experience.

Patch 2.2.0 will be available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC starting April 29.
