- Apple officially announced their intent to contribute to Vision Pro support on the Godot Engine.
- The Godot Engine is a free and open-source cross-platform game engine.
- They have two main immediate goals for their contributions to Godot Game Engine.
Apple has officially begun supporting Vision Pro’s implementation on Godot Game engine – an open-source cross-platform game engine. This means Apple’s software engineers will be helping code and optimize the Vision Pro’s gaming experience for titles developed on Godot Game engine.
According to their public announcement on github, Apple’s goals are two fold:
One of Apple’s immediate goals is to help existing Godot games to function natively within a standard “planar window on visionOS.” Their second is to help support creating immersive experiences through a new specifically catered Godot visionOS VR Plugin.
Ricardo Sanchez, the representative who spoke for Apple, shared his excitement regarding joining the project, while providing context to the notes presented thereafter:
“We’ve attempted to follow Godot’s coding standards and a high-quality bar for our contributions. We hope that our contributions align with Godot’s goals. Lastly, even though we have tried to split the changes into smaller self-contained PRs, we acknowledge that some of these PRs can be of considerable size.”
The Github post continues, providing details regarding the design philosophies for Apple’s software formatting thus far.
Having initially released in early 2024, the Apple Vision Pro is tech company’s take on VR. The luxury headset provides a mixed-reality experience, with the base model retailing for $3,499 USD.
