Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller Usable Outside of GameCube App

|
- The Nintendo Switch 2 has a GameCube controller made specifically for the console.
- The GameCube controller reportedly works for other games outside of Nintendo GameCube Classic titles.
- No backwards compatibility is supported for the GameCube controller; it won’t work for the original Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s GameCube controller will allow play on other titles outside of the Nintendo GameCube Classic Games app; no backwards compatibility will be supported. This means that the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller will not work on the original Switch.
An official Nintendo trailer stated that “the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube—Nintendo Classics,” leading many news outlets to assume functionality would be locked to the app. Nintendo’s response to an exclusive interview with Nintendo Life confirms that this is not the case, but functionality is still limited.
In an exclusive interview with Nintendo Life, Nintendo stated that the controller “doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games.”
The GameCube controller’s usage will not be locked behind a Switch online subscription, a necessary subscription to access the GameCube Classic Games apps.
Priced at GBP £58.99, the Nintendo GameCube Controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 are now available for pre-order on the My Nintendo Store in the UK, as reported by Nintendo Life.
