Nintendo Switch 2’s Gamecube Controller Won’t Work on Switch 2 Titles

The Nintendo Switch 2 has its own iteration of the iconic Gamecube controller – a staple reboot that has been reintroduced for every Nintendo home console. According to the Nintendo UK YouTube channel, “the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube—Nintendo Classics.“
In addition, the Gamecube controller’s functionality on the Switch 2 is essentially locked behind a Nintendo Online subscription. This is because the collection of Gamecube titles, which included in Nintendo Classics. Nintendo Classics are a part of Nintendo’s online subscription plan; without having Nintendo online, players cannot play Gamecube games.
The original Nintendo Switch supported use in Super Smash Bros Ultimate – allowing gamers to utilize the C stick to its fullest capabilities. This was made available through the usage of a Gamecube controller adapter, a separate device catered to connect the classic hardware to modern consoles.
No news regarding Super Smash Bros for the Switch 2 has been revealed. Though many speculate the return of Gamecube controller support for the hypothetical sequel to the Smash Bros franchise, nothing has been confirmed.
The Switch 2 releases on June 5, 2025. Preorders for the console have been heavily impacted by Trump’s tariff laws. Trump paused the tariff for select countries, opening up Nintendo’s opportunity to access the United States and Canada.
