Unknown Worlds Co-Founder Speaks Up Regarding Sudden Departure From Studio

|
- The Unknown Worlds co-founder has released a statement regarding his departure from the studio.
- According to him, Subnautica 2 is ready to launch in early access.
- Krafton now holds the decision on whether to release the game or not.
In an X post, Unknown Worlds co-founder Charlie Cleveland broke his silence regarding his departure from the studio. He said that no longer being able to work at the company started to hurt him and that “this is not where the story ends.”
After giving a brief history of how he ended up in game development, Cleveland shared that the recent events in Unknown Worlds have shocked him and the other founders of the studio, Max McGuire and Ted Gill.
Additionally, Cleveland’s post mentioned that the much-awaited sequel to Subnautica, Subnautica 2, is ready for early access and that they were prepared for players to get their hands on it. However, since they have been removed from their positions, Krafton, the company that bought the studio in 2021, now holds the decision on whether the studio should release the game.
On July 2, the leadership of Unknown Worlds was restructured by Krafton. This move replaced Cleveland, McGuire and Gill in favor of Steve Papoutsis, who was previously the chief development officer of Striking Distance Studios, which made Callisto Protocol. The game received a mixed score on Metacritic. On Feb. 26, the studio laid off most of its developers.
