Key points
  1. PlayStation shipments have reached 77.8 million units, according to Sony’s Q4 FY2024 report.
  2. Reaching 77.8 million units sold, the PlayStation 5 now outruns the Nintendo 3DS with 75.94 million on the list of best-selling game consoles.
  3. Sony expects the release of titles like Ghost of Yotei, which is set to launch in October 2025, will offset a further decrease in PS5 sales.

PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 77.8 million units, as Sony revealed on May 14, 2025, in its reports on the results for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2024, which ended on March 31, 2025.

In Q4 FY2024, Sony shipped only 2.8 million units of Sony’s current console, showing a significant decrease compared to the 4.5 million units shipped in Q4 FY2023. PS5 sales numbers for the full year are also down from the 20.8 million consoles sold in the fiscal year 2023 to 18.5 million units in 2024, marking a 6.5% decrease.

Nevertheless, PlayStation drove most of Sony’s game division income through game and content sales, which amounted to about $17 billion (13% up). Console sales contributed approximately $7.7 billion, and gaming services brought in about $4.5 billion, showing a 23% growth. PlayStation’s operating profit reached about $2.82 billion, exceeding Sony’s forecast.

Throughout the year, Sony earned about $88.13 billion, showing a slight year-over-year decline of 0.5%, while achieving an operating profit of approximately $9.5 billion (16% up). The gaming division generated the highest revenue among all segments, totaling around $31.7 billion, with a 9% increase compared to the previous year.

From April 2024 to March 2025, Sony sold 303.3 million game copies, marking an increase of 16.9 million compared to the previous year. Notably, 76% of games were sold digitally.

Besides that, Sony highlighted the 5% year-over-year increase in monthly active users (MAUs), which rose from Q4 2023’s 118 million to 124 million in Q4 2024. Notably, some of Sony’s titles released on PC require access to the PlayStation Network, which wasn’t the case in 2023.

Sony forecasts that its gaming hardware sales will decrease even further in fiscal year 2025. However, the Japanese company expects that first-party software sales will offset it due to the release of titles like Ghost of Yotei, which is now set to launch in October 2025.

It is worth noting that, reaching 77.8 million units sold, the PlayStation 5 has surpassed the Nintendo 3DS with 75.94 million on the list of best-selling game consoles.
