Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 hits a milestone of 2 million sold copies twelve days after launch on April 24, 2025. A role-playing video game developed by Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive made an announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players will follow eight protagonists, Gustave, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, Renoir, Verso, Monoco and Esquie, on a mission to stop the Paintress, whose god-like powers kill every one of a given age that she draws on a giant monolith once a year. Notably, some of the main characters of the game were voiced by renowned Hollywood actors Charlie Cox (Gustave) and Andy Serkis (Renoir).
According to BBC, composer Lorien Testard had never worked on video games before and was discovered by Guillaume Broche, director of Expedition 33 on Soundcloud. Besides that, Guillaume found the title’s lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, on Reddit, who initially joined the team as a voice cast for a major character in an early version of Clair Obscur.
It is worth noting that French President Emmanuel Macron has congratulated Sandfall Interactive for the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in reply to an Instagram post calling it a “shining example of French audacity and creativity.”
In January 2025, Story Kitchen, a company specializing in adapting video games and other unconventional IPs into movies and TV series, announced a live-action adaptation of the game in collaboration with developer Sandfall Interactive.
