Nintendo Pushes GameShare and System Transfer Update to Switch Ahead of Switch 2 Launch

|
- Nintendo pushed an update that introduces GameShare and System Transfer to the Switch in preparation for Switch 2’s launch.
- The company warns that performing a system transfer without the Switch 2 nearby will upload the system settings to a server and reset the Switch to factory settings.
- The Switch 2 will be released on June 5, 2025.
Nintendo has pushed an update to the Switch that prepares the system for the GameShare capabilities of the Switch 2. Additionally, a system transfer feature was added for people who will leave their Switch behind and use the Switch 2 primarily.
Regarding the system transfer feature, Nintendo warned that those who use it will have their Switch reset to factory settings. Those who want to continue using their Switch should use the local communication version of the system transfer, as this will not reset the Switch. To do this, users must already have a Switch 2 on hand.
Aside from these, the Virtual Game Card feature was also added. This allows users to load their digital games onto their Switch, but its biggest feature is that it allows users to lend their games to members of their family group on Nintendo Switch Online. A game can only be lent to another user for up to 14 days.
A fun addition included in the update is the change to Donkey Kong’s icon in the profile screen. It is now the new design shown on Donkey Kong Bananza. User-verification settings were also added, which allow users to restrict access to the virtual game card feature.
The Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, worldwide. Nintendo has already announced that demand for the console in Japan has exceeded their expectations and might result in Switch 2 shortages in the country. There is no news regarding US stocks.
