Key points
  1. Borderlands 4’s release date was pushed forward and will come out on September 12, 2025.
  2. This change in release date has sparked conversations regarding the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, something studios have been avoiding.
  3. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Studios, announced that Borderlands 4’s release date has been changed from September 23 to September 12 this year. The game will have its own State of Play from PlayStation on April 30.

Forbes gaming writer Paul Tassi wrote that the change raised questions about Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date. “The tweet said they ‘have’ to move it, and obviously this now raises questions about the pending release date of GTA 6, which is looking more and more likely to hit its fall 2025 release date, almost certainly in October or November.”

In March, Gaming.News reported that several game studios are delaying their games as “Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market,” according to one representative who talked to The Game Business. Any game released around the time of Grand Theft Auto 6 will have the attention around them sucked away, which might lead to lower sales.

Tassi also pointed out the Ghost of Yotei’s release date, which is October 2. He mentioned that the title might be “in the fallout zone,” which means that it might be affected by Grand Theft Auto 6’s release.

Borderlands 4 will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date is still not announced, but Take-Two Interactive has mentioned that it will only start promoting the game when it’s close to release. Several outlets report that they believe it’s coming out in fall 2025.
