Blizzard Plans to Support Diablo IV for Ten More Years

- Diablo IV, which was released on June 5, 2023, has long-term plans stretching at least 10 years into the future from now.
- The shortest gap between Diablo releases was the four years separating the first game from Diablo II.
- Diablo III was launched 12 years after the second part, and Diablo IV arrived 11 years after the third installment in the series.
Blizzard’s long-term vision for Diablo covers 12 years, according to Rod Fergusson, SVP, GM of the Diablo Franchise at Blizzard Entertainment.
Rod Fergusson has revealed that the last title in the series, Diablo IV, which was released on June 5, 2023, has long-term plans stretching at least 10 years into the future from now. In a recent “chain interview” for the Game File newsletter, Fergusson shared ambitious plans for the series, emphasizing Blizzard’s commitment to evolving the game, paying heed to players’ feedback.
When asked by Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill about the future of Diablo, Fergusson explained: “We’re here for the long haul. We’ve been doing long-range planning recently. And I’ve created a roadmap—a 10-year roadmap…it was actually a 12-year [roadmap]—I can see this, this, this and this and all these different things that we can do, [which] is really inspiring. And it’s really exciting. We’re focused on what players want…I can’t tell you much more than that.”
It is worth noting that the shortest gap between Diablo releases was the four years separating the first game from Diablo II. After that, fans waited 12 years for Diablo III and another 11 years before Diablo IV arrived.
The news is coming on the heels of the recently announced Diablo 4’s 2025 roadmap, which got heavily criticized by ex-Blizzard president Mike Ybarra.
