Key points
  1. The next Diablo 4 expansion will be released in 2026.
  2. However, there is still a possibility that a small DLC will be released this year.
  3. There’s no release window given for the second major expansion, just the year.

Rod Fergusson mentioned in a D.I.C.E. panel that Diablo 4 won’t have an expansion this year, but instead it will have one in 2026. This deviates from what Fergusson previously said regarding Diablo 4 having annual expansions.

Diablo 4’s general manager, Rod Fergusson, mentioned in an interview with Dexerto that the game will receive multiple annual expansions. This marks the first time a Diablo game will have more than one expansion. However, it seems that Fergusson is walking back on the annual part as the game will miss this year’s expansion.

According to a post by Jason Schreier, Fergusson mentioned in a D.I.C.E. panel about Diablo 4 being developed as a live-service game that the game won’t receive an expansion this year. 2026 is the target year for the new expansion, but there was no release window given.

Diablo 3’s major expansion, Reaper of Souls was released two years after the game’s initial release in 2012. Three years after that, Rise of the Necromancer pack was released in 2017. It’s possible that Diablo 4 might follow this type of release, albeit in a much shorter time frame. According to Kotaku, Diablo 3 was supposed to have a second major expansion. However, it was canceled and the team was advised to move on to creating Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 was released in June 2023 for the PlayStation 4 & 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Diablo 4 was met with stellar reviews with Metacritic giving the PC version of the game an 86/100 and the Xbox version receiving 91/100. Diablo 4 won the Best Online Game of the Year in the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
