The voice actor who did most of the narration and acted as the Ancestor in Darkest Dungeon has passed away, as announced by Red Hook Studios.
Red Hook Studios released a blog post on January 31 about the passing of Wayne June. In the post, the studio reminisces about the time it worked with Wayne and how delightful he was to work with. The studio also praised his voice saying, “Wayne’s singular baritone and masterful cadence elevated everything he read”.
Wayne June acted as the game’s Ancestor and the main narrator. Players will hear his quips as they progress through Darkest Dungeon. In Darkest Dungeon 2, he reprised his role as the main narrator and the Academic. For his performance in the first Darkest Dungeon, he was nominated for Best Supporting Performance in a Drama in the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR) 2016 awards.
Wayne June has also lent his voice to a BBC New Creatives work according to his IMDb page. He also has a YouTube channel where he reads poems and stories. Among the stories he read are “The Thing On The Doorstep” by H.P. Lovecraft and “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe.
Darkest Dungeon is a game franchise developed by Red Hook Studios. The first game came out in January 2016 for PC. Darkest Dungeon II was released seven years after in May 2023. Both of the games were met with positive reception with their Metacritic scores not dipping below 80.
