According to insider Daniel Richtman, Sony is reportedly casting actors for an unannounced AAA PlayStation project, which he believes is the next God of War title set in Egyptian mythology.

“Sony is casting Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game, which is likely to be the next God of War that explores Egyptian mythology,” Richtman shared via Patreon.

In 2018’s God of War, players learned through the character Tyr that other pantheons, including Egyptians, exist in Kratos’ universe. Furthermore, a 2021 spin-off comic God of War: Fallen God set between the events of God of War III (2010) and God of War (2018) revealed that Kratos had briefly encountered Egyptian deities in his past.

The God of War series has already explored two major pantheons of gods and their mythologies, Greek and Norse, and the prospect of Kratos exploring Egyptian sights isn’t entirely new. In the Making-of documentary for the 2018 game, creative director Cory Barlog revealed that Santa Monica Studio initially considered Egypt as the setting before opting for the Norse setting.

Ancient Egyptian mythology features a diverse pantheon of gods over 1,500 gods and goddesses, with some of the most well-known:

  • Ra – The sun god, central to creation myths.
  • Osiris – God of the afterlife and resurrection.
  • Isis – Goddess of magic, motherhood, and protection.
  • Horus – Sky god, often associated with kingship.
  • Anubis – God of mummification and the afterlife.
  • Thoth – God of wisdom, writing, and knowledge.
  • Hathor – Goddess of love, music, and fertility.
  • Set (Seth) – God of chaos and the desert.

Besides the long list of gods, potential shifts for storytelling can also benefit from iconic locations like the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel Temples, Nile River, Alexandria’s Bibliotheca, Mount Sinai, Siwa Oasis and many others.

Santa Monica Studio has yet to confirm any details about this rumored project, while the developer is known to be working on a new IP, described as sci-fi in nature.

As of November 2023, the God of War game series has sold over 66 million copies worldwide. Sony also has been exploring other prospects for the franchise and a God of War TV series is currently in development at Amazon Prime.
