Nintendo revealed an unknown Mario Kart game in the presentation video of the new Nintendo Switch 2. Brief gameplay footage showcased unfamiliar tracks, redesigned karts, and a visual style that departs from the latest Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Nintendo has not yet confirmed a new title or provided additional details, while the game footage highlighted a completely new racing environment, showing the karts of subtly different designs. This approach mirrors the 2016 unveiling of Super Mario Odyssey, where Nintendo first teased gameplay during the original Switch reveal, with a full showcase coming months later.

The Mario Kart series is a popular set of kart racing games developed and published by Nintendo. The series features characters from the Mario franchise as well as other gaming franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, F-Zero, Excitebike, and Splatoon, racing against each other in go-karts across various tracks, using power-ups to gain an advantage. As of Sept. 30, 2024, the combined sales of the Mario Kart 8 series, including both the original Wii U version and the Nintendo Switch’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, have surpassed 72 million copies worldwide. Specifically, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was released on April 28, 2017, for the Nintendo Switch, has sold approximately 64.27 million units, making it the best-selling game on the platform.

In the published reveal video, Nintendo also promised more updates about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its lineup this spring, setting up the date for the Nintendo Direct presentation – April 2, 2025
