Several Japanese Retailers Halt Sales of Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090/5080 GPUs to Tourists

- Japanese retailers have stopped selling Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090/5080 GPUs to tourists.
- They’ve done this in hopes of stopping resellers from getting their hands on the cards and making sure they’re selling directly to consumers.
- The Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series was released on January 30, 2025.
Several retailers in Japan have stopped selling their Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080/5090 graphics cards to tourists in the country. The retailers are doing this to combat the reselling of the GPUs and make sure they only sell them to consumers rather than resellers.
Wccftech reported about the situation, and according to them, the low demand for GPUs in Japan has prompted tourists to fly over to Japan and buy RTX 50-series GPUs as they are much more widely available in the country, intending to resell them in their own countries for a much higher price.
After finding out about this, Japanese retailers have started requiring tourists to fill out a “Japanese residence” test at the checkout. The content of the test is unknown, however, Wccftech mentions that “there are surely workarounds to this.”
Nvidia’s 50-series GPUs are still suffering from stock problems, resulting in the cards being hard to find in certain countries. Additionally, there have been reported problems with them, including defective 5080 cards and more.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series was released on January 30, 2025. The initial launch of the series included the 5090 and the 5080. The 5070 and 5070 Ti followed in February. Lastly, the 5060 was unveiled earlier this month.
