Key points
- Gamalytic has revealed that 66% of the games released this year have not recouped Steam’s $100 registration fee.
- Steam refunds the registration fee once a game earns $1000 in revenue.
- There were 12875 games released this year at the time of writing.
The Steam Analytics chart on Gamalytic revealed that more than 60% of the games that were uploaded on the storefront from the start of this year to date haven’t reached $1000 in revenue. This means that the developers have not recouped the $100 they spent to have their game available on Steam.
For context, Valve asks developers to pay $100 as a registration fee for their game to be available on their storefronts. Once the game receives $1000 in revenue, Steam returns the registration fee, essentially making it free.
However, out of the 12875 games that were released from Jan. 1, 2025, until today, 8502 of them have less than $1000 in revenue. This is 66% of the games that were released this year. Additionally, around 6127 games had fewer than 100 sales, which constitutes 47.6%.
Other information from the site includes the average playtime, which was 3.9 hours, average game prices, which were $8, and the median revenue, which only amounted to $202.
The largest number of games launched this year was recorded in March at 1628 games. As of now, aside from the current month of October, the least number of games launched in a month was 1011, which was recorded in February.
