Key points

  1. Massive Entertainment published an update stating that the company realigned its teams and resources.
  2. Within the announcement, Massive Entertainment introduced a “voluntary career transition program.”
  3. The program gives “eligible team members the opportunity to take their next career step on their own terms.”

Massive Entertainment is reportedly laying off staff and restructuring its teams as a part of the studio’s ongoing evolution and long-term planning.  The restructuring was announced via social media, while the layoffs are speculated by Insider Gaming. The social media post did not confirm the layoffs but used jargon that insinuates layoffs, hence Insider Gaming’s logical conclusion that layoffs were a part of the restructuring.

Within the announcement, Massive Entertainment introduced a “voluntary career transition program,” which provides “eligible team members the opportunity to take their next career step on their own terms.”

Insider Gaming claims the studio is attempting to soften the PR blow by referring to the layoffs as a voluntary career transition program, sourcing French newspaper Le Figaro, which claims the plan will run until Dec. 15. The term “voluntary career transition program” supposedly refers to employees on permanent contracts who are being reassigned to a new project after their previous project released in stores, thereby insinuating potential layoffs; the number of impacted employees is undisclosed.

Despite the changes, Massive Entertainment confirmed its commitment to creating “great experiences for players around the world, including The Division 2, The Division 2: Survivors, The Division Resurgence, and The Division 3.”

“That sucks. Massive does excellent work on environments and weather, in my experience,” one Reddit user lamented. As of writing, other media outlets and online communities believe the announcement was in regard to layoffs.

Massive Entertainment is an Ubisoft subsidiary. Ubisoft has been seeing major restructuring and layoffs as a result of internal transformation. Tencent recently invested approximately $1.25 billion in collaboration with Ubisoft.
