On Oct. 9, 2025, a report from Game File revealed that an Assassin’s Creed game set in the Reconstruction period of the American Civil War was reportedly canceled. According to the report, players will play as a black person “who had been formerly enslaved in the South and moved west to start a new life.”
The report then continued, saying that the game would’ve had the player fight for justice and even “confront the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan.” It mentioned that he information came from five Ubisoft employees who talked to Game File under the condition of anonymity.
Three of the sources stated that the game was canceled due to two reasons: the online backlash following the reveal of Yasuke and the US’s increasingly tense political climate. One source added that the game was “too political in a country too unstable, to make it short.” The sources also added that the reasons for the game’s cancellation were unusual.
Last month, Assassin’s Creed Shadows received its expansion, Claws of Awaji. As of the writing of this article, the expansion has mixed reviews, with players complaining that the expansion wasn’t worth the money due to how short it actually is. It was released on Sept. 16, 2025.
