In a report published by Nikkei, the organizers of the Tokyo Game Show, the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), revealed that 51% of Japanese game studios use AI or generative AI in the development of their games.
The report revealed that AI is often used for the production of visuals, such as characters and videos. Meanwhile, some studios use it for the generation of stories, text and supporting programming. 32% of the companies use AI to help develop their own game engines.
The survey participants included big names in game development, such as Capcom and Sega.
Google published a similar article in August, revealing that AI has been working alongside some game studios in the US. According to Google’s report, 44% of developers who were surveyed already use AI for asset or content optimization.
38% of them use AI for in-game coaching or automated tutorials, and a similar percentage uses it for dynamic balancing and gameplay tuning. Additionally, 33% of the developers use it for “real-time voice and audio enhancements.”
In the Nikkei report, CESA also found that the average salaries of people in game development studios have increased compared to last year. For example, this year’s starting salary was 259,000 Japanese yen, an increase of 23,000 yen from last year.
