MachineGames may create a direct follow-up to 2017’s Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, continuing BJ Blazkowicz’s story despite previous spinoffs.
During the second episode of Noclip’s documentary on Swedish video game developer MachineGames, studio head Jerk Gustafsson stated that the developer is interested in creating a direct sequel to Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, the seventh main entry in the series, which, in turn, was a sequel to 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order.
“We have always seen this as a trilogy,” Gustafsson said. “That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least [BJ], what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one. I think that’s important to say, because, at least I hope, we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
What makes this announcement notable is the studio’s intention to continue the story and world of The New Colossus directly rather than exploring spinoffs. The series’ timeline has become complicated, as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus ended on an open note, while 2019’s Wolfenstein: Youngblood jumped 20 years ahead to focus on Blazkowicz’s twin daughters.
As of the time of writing, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with 31,981 reviews. The game has won four awards in different categories across multiple industry award ceremonies.
The last big project released by the studio was 2024’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and its recently released DLC, The Order of Giants.
