Borderlands 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025, as announced by Randy Pitchford, CEO of the game’s development company Gearbox, via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The sequel to 2019’s Borderlands 3 and the fifth installment in the main Borderlands series will also be released for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S on September 12, 2025, more than a week earlier than the initially announced date.
The story of Borderlands 4 unfolds as Pandora’s moon, Elpis, destroys the protective barrier of a planet named Kairos after being teleported away by Lilith using her Siren powers.
In the upcoming game, players will be able to assume the role of one of the Vault Hunters, who must lead the resistance against a ruthless dictator named the Timekeeper and his army of synthetic followers, the Order, on Kairos while searching for secret alien treasures.
Gearbox has teased new vehicles and traversal tools, including a grappling hook, for Borderlands 4, which will offer two gameplay modes: solo and co-op, with the option to team up with up to three other players.
As of May 2025, the Borderlands franchise has sold approximately 93 million copies worldwide, according to the latest financial report from its publisher’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive.
