Tencent acquired 15.75% of Arrowhead Games, costing the company around $80 million. Arrowhead’s founders, Johan Pilestedt, Malin Hedstrom, Peter Lindgren, Emil Englund, and Anton Stenmark own the remaining 84.25% shares.
Founder John Pilestedt talked to DI regarding the acquisition, stating that partnering with Tencent opens up opportunities for China as a market, a very sought-after target demographic within the gaming industry.
Tencent is the world’s largest video game vendor. The multibillion-dollar company has complete ownership of Riot Games, the company responsible for Valorant and League of Legends.
Arrowhead Game Studio’s next game will reportedly be funded completely independently, thereby no longer influenced by their partnership with Sony’s PlayStation, according to a statement from CEO of the studio on May 15. Helldivers 2, the studio’s most successful title, was available only on PlayStation and PC; their next title may be released across more platforms.
The extraction shooter grew in popularity due to its comical cooperative gameplay alongside continued live-service updates. As of November 2024, Helldivers 2 has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.
