- Arrowhead studio’s next game will be funded completely independently.
- Sony will not be involved in the development of the studio’s next title.
- The news was shared by Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Game studios.
CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios Shams Jorjani announced that their next game will be funded completely independently, thereby no longer influenced by their partnership with Sony’s PlayStation. The news was shared via Discord:
“The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead’s future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn’t have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you,” Jorjani posted on Discord, as according to Forbes.
“The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we’ll call 100% of those shots.”
The studio’s announcement of their independence opens opportunities for multi-platform release – which was hindered by their partnership with PlayStation prior. Sony’s hinderance on Helldivers 2 was most evident when the company forced players to sign into their PSN accounts to access Helldivers 2.
The decision was hit with massive backlash, with users review bombing the game on Steam; Sony’s enforcement of the policy was later reversed after widespread criticism. In addition to the PSN constraints, Helldivers 2 is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PC, a limitation that resulted from the reliance on Sony.
Helldivers 2, the studio’s most successful title, is an extraction shooter that grew in popularity due to its comical cooperative gameplay alongside continued live-service updates. Just this week, the game received a patch update that added new enemy types alongside customization features. As of November 2024, Helldivers 2 has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.
