Nintendo locked the Nintendo Switch 2 behind a day 1 patch, preventing console leaks prior to the official June 5, 2025, release date. The news was made public after early access leakers attempted to play-test the console on May 27, a little over a week before the console’s debut.
The social media post showcases a video of the Switch 2’s packaging, which comes with the marketed Switch 2 accessories and console. A plastic wrap surrounds the hardware.
This marks the first time a Nintendo console has required an internet connection; Nintendo’s internet enforcement tactics mitigate unwanted activities from the public. The company is known for actively protecting its intellectual property with legal action, as showcased by the ongoing legal battle with Palworld.
Nintendo updated its Switch online user agreement to include harsher punishment for emulation. Nintendo now has legal precedent to render a consumer’s Nintendo device permanently unusable—this is assuming they break the user agreement. The Nintendo Switch 2 has surpassed 60,000 units sold on Amazon Japan.
