Nintendo Confirms Mario Kart World Was Originally Planned as a Switch 1 Title

- Mario Kart World was developed originally for the Switch 1.
- Hardware limitations prompted Nintendo to postpone the title and release it on the Switch 2.
- Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title.
Nintendo originally developed Mario Kart World for the Switch 1, according to the official Nintendo blog. The news was broken in an interview format, where a Nintendo developer answered questions regarding the Switch 2 launch title.
“When we were developing for Nintendo Switch, we often worried whether we could find the right balance between planning and performance,” Kenta Sato said, a member of Nintendo’s entertainment planning and development production group.
“If we had included everything we wanted to in this game’s vast world, then it wouldn’t have run at 60 fps and would have suffered from constant framerate drops.”
The hardware limitations of the Switch 1 hindered development for Mario Kart World, which saw early development in 2018. This prompted Nintendo to reschedule the Mario Kart title for the Switch 2, allowing for graphical and gameplay improvements that otherwise would not have been possible.
The rest of the interview delves into gameplay elements and details that will debut in Mario Kart World. Mario Kart World’s release date is on June 5, 2025, the same day the Nintendo Switch 2 debuts because the game is included as a part of a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle. The last mainline Mario Kart game was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The original iteration of Mario Kart 8 came out May 29, 2014, more than 10 years ago.
