Nintendo has turned to Samsung to make an Nvidia-designed custom processor for the Switch 2 console in an attempt to speed up production.
According to Bloomberg, the move may help the Japanese company ramp up production of the gaming console enough to surpass the projected 15 million units to be sold by March 2026.
Notably, Samsung already produces other components for Nintendo, such as memory chips and displays, but has reportedly been struggling to compete with TSMC in making chips not just for Nintendo but for many other companies.
The report emphasizes that TSMC has been widening its lead over Samsung by collaborating with major companies like Apple and Nvidia to manufacture their chips. However, Samsung’s new partnership with Nintendo is expected to help the South Korean company regain some lost ground through this high-profile contract.
Samsung is producing the chips using its 8-nanometer node rather than its 5-nm node, and Nintendo reportedly opted for the 8-nm technology to ensure a cheaper and more reliable production process.
