Key points
  1. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford posted a response to a fan who had urged the executive to not release the game at $80.
  2. The executive told gamers to he was not responsible for pricing.
  3. Randy Pitchford then shared an anecdote of buying the Sega Genesis in 1991.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded to a gamer’s request to avoid releasing Borderlands 4 at $80. In the social media post, he stated that the potential $80 price tag on the upcoming title is “not his call,” and that “if you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”

He then shares a story of purchasing the Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 while working part-time in high school, using the anecdote as an inspiring example of how the CEO “made it happen.” Unsurprisingly, the response has received criticism online. IGN reports on the various statements made by gamers, which largely bash on the CEO for being an elitist.

The CEO had previously mentioned that he had no control over the pricing. The response occurred during a PAX East Panel:

“I’ll tell you the truth. I don’t know. That is the truth. I’ll hit it straight on. It’s an interesting time,” he stated, neither confirming nor denying the $80 price point.

“On one level, we’ve got a competitive marketplace where the people that make those choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive. […] Borderlands 4 has more than twice the development budget for Borderlands 3. More than twice. So the truth is, I don’t know what the price is going to be.”

Borderlands 4 will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with a release date of September 12, 2025.
