Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition Potentially Marks the End of Updates

|
- Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition was released on May 14, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox series X|S and PC.
- The definitive edition is marketed as the most extensive version of the game.
- Fans are worried the release means that the development and updates for the title are over.
Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition was released across platforms with very little marketing, and it is supposedly the most extensive version of the game. This sparked community concerns that developmental updates for the title were over, according to IGN and EuroGamer.
“With no announcements forthcoming about a Kombat Pack 3 or anything else meaningful for Mortal Kombat 1, fans believe that March 2025’s release of the T-1000 guest character will go down as the game’s final content drop,” IGN wrote.
The Reddit community for Mortal Kombat is currently voicing its frustrations. There appears to be resounding agreement among the online group that this truly does mark the end of Mortal Kombat 1.
During the game’s initial marketing, NetherRealm’s chief creative officer for Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, posted on X that “NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.” The post has since been highlighted by various news outlets. It has been a year and eight months since the game was released, which does not constitute a long time by video game update cycle standards.
The definitive edition added new character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion and Shao Khan alongside a movie skin for Sub-Zero and a tournament-themed skin for Liu Kang. Mortal Kombat has reportedly sold over 5 million copies.
