Nintendo Switch 2 Battery Optimization and System Lock Features Revealed

- The Nintendo Switch 2’s battery optimization feature slows charging speed upon reaching 90%.
- System lock allows the user to set a passcode that protects the device.
- Nintendo Switch 1 has no locking features.
Social media posts revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly features two additional features debuting on the upcoming console: system lock and battery optimization, both of which were unavailable for the predecessor.
The battery optimization feature borrows from smartphone technology, slowing down the charging speed upon reaching 90%. This preserves the battery’s longevity, as fully charging a device can result in overheating, which accelerates the degradation of internal components.

As for the system lock, the feature is once again reminiscent of smartphone technology. The feature allows the user to set a four-digit PIN to access the device; despite being conceptually simple to implement, the original Nintendo Switch lacks this feature. Prior to the Switch 2’s release, the only option users have to password protect their device is through parental controls.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to the immensely popular Nintendo Switch, one of the most popular consoles of all time. With the Switch 2’s release date coming soon on June 5, 2025, Nintendo updated its user agreement to reinforce legal control over their prior-generation hardware. The user agreement allows Nintendo to brick a consumer’s Nintendo Switch, rendering it unusable.
