Rockstar Postpones GTA VI Release to 2026

Rockstar has officially announced that Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

The developer didn’t provide any details on the reason for the delay, except to highlight that it aligns with its goal of exceeding players’ expectations.

The news comes ahead of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two’s, upcoming earnings report, scheduled for May 15, 2025. Also, it is worth noting that the delay’s announcement comes after months of speculation about whether the game would meet its 2025 launch window despite Take-Two’s assurances that the game was on track.

The update on the game’s release date is also coming on the heels of GTA VI’s first and only trailer celebrating its first anniversary and 250 million views.

Due to the trailer, it is known that the eighth main Grand Theft Auto title, following Grand Theft Auto V, and the 16th entry overall will be set in an open world of the fictional US state of Leonida, based on Florida and its Miami-inspired Vice City. The main narrative is expected to follow the criminal duo of Lucia and her male partner, whose name is yet unknown.

GTA VI was officially announced by Rockstar Games in December 2023 and gained so much hype that its initially declared release window, autumn 2025, caused multiple publishers and developers to reschedule their releases that fell within the same time frame. The only exception was an American video game publisher, Devolver Digital, that announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that they would release a game on the exact same day and time as GTA VI.

It is worth noting that as of February 2025, GTA V, has sold over 210 million copies worldwide, making it one of the second best-selling video games of all time, second only to Minecraft and his 350 million units.
