- South Korean video game developer and publisher Nexon secures rights to develop a new StarCraft title.
- Nexon has also secured distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile in Korea and Japan.
- This marks Blizzard’s first formal IP collaboration with a Korean game company.
Nexon has secured the rights to develop content based on the StarCraft IP and distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile in South Korea and Japan.
According to MTN, a South Korean video game developer and publisher, Nexon has been selected by Blizzard as the preferred bidder to develop a new StarCraft title, beating out NCSoft, Netmarble and Krafton, who were also competing in negotiations for the StarCraft IP.
The MTN report states that two companies entered negotiations with Blizzard on April 28, 2025, which ended with Nexon’s being selected. This marks the first time Blizzard has formally partnered with a domestic Korean game company for IP development and distribution.
Given StarCraft’s massive cultural impact in Korea and the continued interest in the Overwatch franchise, Blizzard began seeking bids in late 2023, offering Korean publishers a package deal: rights to create new content using the StarCraft IP and regional distribution rights for Overwatch Mobile.
It has been reported that Blizzard’s bidding allowed broad creative freedom for the new StarCraft IP with no restrictions on genre or platform. On the Overwatch Mobile side, Blizzard has offered limited distribution to Korea and Japan, which reportedly dampened enthusiasm among some competitors who were aiming for global publishing rights.
