A Pokémon Scarlet and Violet coordinator is helping The Pokémon Company write a book focused on the ecology of Pokémon. The book is called Pokécology and will go into detail about Pokémon behavior and their interactions with their environment, which differs from what a Pokédex will provide players.
The coordinator credited in the game is animal behavior researcher Yoshinari Yonehara. He has published different research papers regarding sea bird behavior, ground beetle diversity, and telemetry.
Automaton Media mentioned that relevant topics for a book focusing on ecology might include eating and sleeping habits, hibernation periods, and migration patterns. According to The Pokémon Company, while ecology might be a complicated topic for children, they will provide simple explanations so they can still enjoy the book.
For illustrations, the company has hired Chihiro Kinoshita, another animal behavior academic who has published several research papers. Her illustrations are on her Instagram page and might be a tell on how the book is going to look.
Pokécology will be released on June 18, 2025, in Japan. It will have 192 pages full of Pokémon ecology goodness. Pre-orders are already up for Japanese bookstores and Amazon Japan and will cost fans around $10. There’s no information on whether the book will be translated into English and released overseas.
