Key points

  1. Nintendo clarifies that the Switch Game Vouchers are only applicable to Switch games, not Switch 2 games.
  2. The game vouchers are a good way for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to save money on first-party games.
  3. There are no similar promos announced for the Switch 2 as of writing.

Nintendo’s Japanese customer service Twitter account published a post explaining that the Switch Game Vouchers cannot be used to redeem Switch 2 exclusive games. The Switch Game Vouchers allow Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to save a few dollars when buying Switch games.

The vouchers can only be bought in pairs and cost $99.98. Each voucher can be used to redeem a game from their catalog, which contains mostly Switch exclusive games. Considering that most of the first-party games on the Switch are $59.99, players will be able to save around $20. If the annual cost of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is added, which costs $20, then it will break even. However, it’s important to note that that’s the cost of an annual subscription.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is planning on releasing games past $70. The upcoming launch title, Mario Kart World, will cost around $90 for a physical copy and $80 for a digital copy.  Considering the price increase, Nintendo’s Japanese customer service Twitter account might have deemed it important to clarify that the vouchers will only work for the Switch games.

Nintendo has not announced any promo similar to the vouchers for the Switch 2. The console is set to release on June 5. Pre-orders for United States and Canada have been postponed for a while, but has come back just recently.
