Key points
  1. Games Insiders have reported that there will be a closed alpha of Marathon after the April 12 presentation.
  2. They also clarified that there will be no shadowdrops happening, but instead will be a closed alpha sign-up.
  3. Marathon is an upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter from Bungie.

Bungie’s sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, will have a relatively large closed alpha after its April 12 gameplay showcase. Games Insider Tom Henderson posted this information on Twitter, and Paul Tassi, a games journalist from Forbes, corroborated it.

On April 8, Tom Henderson replied to a tweet containing an image of Marathon popping up on the Xbox store. This sparked rumors that the game would either be available fully after the showcase or that a closed beta would be released.

Henderson clarified that there would be no shadowdrops happening. The game will instead announce its closed alpha and will open up sign ups. This information was corroborated by Paul Tassi, a games journalist writing for Forbes. He added that the closed alpha is something that will happen later.

Recently, Marathon’s official Twitter account has been active. They’ve been posting images and videos that are cryptic and were being solved by the community. People have found that some of them point to coordinates of real-world locations, and apparently, some participants who solved the puzzles were offered early beta access.

Marathon still has no release date as of writing. The gameplay loop will be shown at the April 12 showcase and will be the first look at the project since its announcement in 2023. The game’s store page is already available on the Xbox store. Marathon will be available on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5.
