Key points
  1. No Man’s Sky’s Relics update adds fossil excavation and customizable skeleton displays.
  2. Digged-up prehistoric bones of varying rarity will be available for barter with a new NPC.
  3. Stone Golem, skeletal Titan Worms, and Stone Ghosts will guard the rarest bone dig sites.

Dig sites, fossil trading, and museum displays are coming to No Man’s Sky’s in a new paleontology-themed expansion called Relics.

In a recently released update, Hello Games brought the possibility of digging beneath alien worlds to unearth procedurally generated prehistoric bones, assemble them into skeletons, and showcase the finds in custom museum-style displays at the base.

Skeletons are built based on player whim, meaning the player’s fossil collection can be as anatomically accurate or hilariously cursed up to the gamer’s taste. On top of that there is also now a new specialist NPC at space stations offering fossil trade options.

It is worth noting that not all bone dig sites are safe. The deeper the player will go, the more likely to encounter new threats like colossal Stone Golem, skeletal Titan Worms, and Stone Ghosts.

This Relics patch will soon be followed by a new time-limited community expedition, where Travellers can race to uncover the rarest fossils and compete for event-exclusive rewards.

No Man’s Sky has experienced a great evolution since its turbulent debut in 2016. Initially met with heavy criticism, the game has steadily won over players through a consistent flow of free updates and the dedication of its developers, earning it a Very Positive rating on Steam with 262,925 reviews as of the time of writing. As of January 2025, the game has surpassed 10 million copies sold.

As of 2025, No Man’s Sky is available on PlayStation 4|5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC (both Windows and macOS ) and VR via PlayStation VR1|2 and PC VR through SteamVR, featuring cross-platform play.

While Hello Games continues to expand and refine No Man’s Sky, the studio is also working on its next project: Light No Fire—a fantasy survival adventure set in one vast, Earth-sized world.
