Series Producer Claims Monster Hunter Wilds Became Successful Because it Has Plot

- According to Ryozo Tsujimoto, Monster Hunter series producer, he believes that the game was successful due to its story-driven approach.
- He also mentioned heightened immersion and crossplay as two other factors that contributed to the game’s success.
- Monster Hunter Wilds has sold 8 million copies in three days since its launch, making it Capcom’s fastest selling game.
In an interview, Monster Hunter series producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto, mentions that he believes the main reason for Monster Hunter Wilds’ success is its focus on the story. Despite this statement seeming absurd for people unfamiliar with Monster Hunter, the very existence of a meaningful storyline is something the series severely lacked until the release of Wilds.
According to Automaton, Tsujimoto spoke to The Nikkei about the success of Monster Hunter Wilds. He mentioned that he believes it came down to three things: Crossplay, Heightened Immersion, and Story.
Crossplay has always been something that Monster Hunter players asked for. Games released in the past five years have always included crossplay in them, which made players wonder why Monster Hunter Rise did not have the same treatment. For Monster Hunter Wilds, Tsujimoto acknowledged this need, noting that more players than ever are playing on PC—even in Japan, a country that traditionally prefers console gaming.
Tsujimoto credited the game being fully voiced as the main reason it has “heightened immersion.” The game’s story also played a large part in it. Monster Hunter Wilds is the first Monster Hunter game to truly have a focus on story. Previous entries were all focused on gameplay mechanics and usually left the story as an afterthought.
Automaton also reported that Kaname Fujioka, the art director and executive director of Monster Hunter Wilds, expects players to theorize a lot about the game’s lore and worldbuilding. According to him, the developers have hidden a secret in the game’s logo that they would like the players to discover.
Monster Hunter Wilds has sold 8 million copies in just three days since its launch, making it Capcom’s fastest selling game. At its launch, there were more than a million players on Steam alone.
