Key points

  1. Hungrybox wins his second Genesis tournament six years after his first one.
  2. He is considered as one of the best players to ever touch Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  3. Hungrybox got very emotional on his way to victory.

Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma claims his second Super Smash Bros. Melee Genesis title win in an emotional fashion over Alvaro “Trif” Garcia Moral, the best Peach player in Spain. Hungrybox won his last Genesis title six years ago in 2019.

Genesis is considered as the “Superbowl” of Smash as it attracts players from all over the world to compete against each other. This year’s Genesis was a return to form of Hungrybox, one of the Five Gods of Super Smash Bros. Melee. He won the tournament after a grueling 10-game set. At the very last game, Hungrybox was in the lead and started getting emotional mid-game, even hitting himself to put himself back in the game.

His opponent, Trif, is a Peach player from Spain and hasn’t won any major tournaments yet. He looked strong heading to Grand Finals defeating Joseph “Mang0” Marquez, widely considered as the Greatest of All Time in Melee as well as a member of the Five Gods, and Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett. Both are very prolific top players.

Hungrybox is considered as one of the most consistent Melee players in the world, being one of the two five Gods who can still duke it out against the younger players who are making waves such as Cody Schwab and Alexandra “Salt” Rennie. The two Gods in attendance, Mang0 and Hungrybox, clashed in Loser’s Semi-Final where Hungrybox took it over Mang0 and eliminated him from the tournament.

Hungrybox has been Melee’s number one player in 2017, 2018, 2019. He has also consistently ranked at the Top 7 of players since 2009. He also has won EVO, the most prestigious fighting game tournament, for Melee in 2016. There was a time in Super Smash Bros. Melee where he was deemed as a villain by the community. However, that time is already long gone and in this tournament, the crowd had his back.
