Overwatch 2 To Roll Out Its Biggest Gameplay Update Yet, Brings Back Loot Boxes

- Loot boxes return in Overwatch 2, available through challenges and the battle pass.
- Stadium Mode launches in April, offering a best-of-seven tactical format inspired by Counter-Strike.

Two new heroes, Freja (Season 16) and Aqua (Season 18), bring new playstyles and abilities.
Overwatch 2 developers are introducing major gameplay changes to the game, including a new Perks system, the return of loot boxes, a revamped 6v6 competitive mode, and a tactical Stadium Mode. Loot boxes and overhauled 6v6 will launch with Season 15 on February 18, while Stadium Mode is set to debut in Season 16.
Among the most controversial changes is the return of loot boxes, a monetization system Blizzard removed when Overwatch 2 transitioned to free-to-play. The company promises transparency, publicly disclosing drop rates and ensuring each box contains at least a “Rare” item, with a guaranteed “Legendary” drop every 20 boxes. Players can earn loot boxes through weekly challenges and events, while the seasonal battle pass will grant up to three Legendary loot boxes. Blizzard has not confirmed whether players will still be able to purchase cosmetics directly from the in-game shop.

Another major addition comes in April with the introduction of Stadium Mode, a best-of-seven competitive format inspired by Counter-Strike and Valorant. Players will earn currency each round to upgrade their hero’s abilities, selecting between offensive and team-based enhancements. The mode will feature its own ranked queue, rotating maps, and objectives across Control, Clash, and Push game types. Both first-person and third-person perspectives will be available.
New heroes are also on the way. Season 16 will introduce Freja, a high-mobility character wielding a dual-mode crossbow that can switch between rapid-fire and precision shots. Players will get an early preview of Freja during a trial weekend in Season 15. Later, Season 18 will add Aqua, a hero whose abilities focus on water-based mechanics.

Blizzard’s sweeping Overwatch 2 update is one of its most ambitious yet, aiming to revitalize the player base following a noticeable decline after the release of Marvel Rivals.
