Nintendo Switch 2 Indefinitely Delayed in China, Preorders Presumably Canceled

- The Nintendo Switch 2’s release in China is indefinitely delayed.
- This delay was announced despite preorders having already been accepted.
- Nintendo’s Switch 2 must undergo a thorough approval process from Chinese authorities prior to its launch.
Nintendo has indefinitely delayed the launch of the Switch 2 in China, despite retailers having taken preorders for the device both in-store and online. These preorders have been presumably canceled. The delay occurred as Nintendo waits to gauge the demand for the upcoming console prior to its launch in China.
This release pattern is reminiscent of the original Nintendo Switch – which arrived in China two years after it was available globally. The original Nintendo Switch is sold in China in a partnership with Tencent, which created speculation regarding another potential collaboration preparing for the Switch 2’s launch.
“The hurdles to success in China remain high,” Chief analyst at Gamma Data told Nikkei, the original source for the story. “They need to improve the consumer experience while complying with government policies, and there is also the issue of whether they will be able to introduce major international software.”
The Switch 2 will need to undergo a thorough approval process from Chinese authorities before it can be released in China.
Trump’s tariffs also impacted the Switch 2 preorders in the Unites States and inadvertently in Canada as well. United States president paused the tariffs momentarily, a move that is expected to facilitate preorder processing in the states. Nintendo has not officially responded to the pause of the tariffs.
