Key points
  1. Eidos-Montreal had been actively pitching a new Deus Ex title.
  2. Partners were hesitant to invest in Deux Ex, resulting in no commitments being made.
  3. The studio laid off 75 workers on March 31, 2025.

Eidos-Montreal was reportedly actively pitching a new Deus Ex title to multiple external partners, but no commitments were made. This news was revealed by Insider-Gaming while investigating the layoffs within the studio.

The partners Eidos-Montreal pitched to were supposedly reluctant because the publishers “aren’t willing to take on the financial risk that comes with the Deux Ex franchise at the moment.”

According to Insider-Gaming, the pitched Deus Ex game is different from the one that was canceled by Embracer in the beginning of 2024. Though the pitches for a New Deus Ex title have been unsuccessful, the layoffs that occurred within Eidos-Montreal are supposedly unrelated to the pitches.

On March 31, Eidos-Montreal laid off 75 employees because the studio did not “have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.” The studio vouched for the cut workforce, stating that “these very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and [they] are working to support them through this transition.”

The Deus Ex franchise has sold a cumulative total of over 12 million copies, with the latest entry to the series, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, having been released in August of 2016. The story takes place in a dystopian, cyberpunk future – with each entry in the series building upon the universe.
