Tokyo Xtreme Racer Returns After 18 Years: Early Access Begins January 23 on Steam

After an 18-year break, the Tokyo Xtreme Racer, also known as Shutokō Battle, is making a comeback. A Japanese video game developer, Genki, has announced that the new game will enter Steam Early Access on Jan. 23, 2025.

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer revival was first announced in August 2024 with a short trailer that teased its return to the streets of Tokyo. Genki described the game as “a return to the Tokyo Xtreme Racer roots.”

This Early Access phase will allow Genki to gather feedback from players and “elevate the game even further.” The development team plans for the Early Access period to last approximately four months, culminating in a full release that will include the remainder of the game series’ story, additional cars, rival characters, and other new features. There is also a reward for early adopters, Genki promises a discounted rate for those who join the game early.

The studio has also unveiled the PC specifications for the game, giving fans a glimpse into the hardware needed to experience the revival of the series.
