Sony Files Patent for Solar-Powered PlayStation Controller

|
- Sony files a patent for a solar-powered PlayStation controller, chargeable with exposure to light.
- These controllers can also retain the extra electricity in the battery, not requiring any other power source.
- Currently, Sony has two controller models, DualSense and DualSense Edge.
A new patent for a solar-powered PlayStation controller was filed by Sony on March 6, 2025, according to the WIPO IP portal.
The patent, named “Operation Device,” describes a PlayStation controller featuring photovoltaic elements that would allow it to charge through exposure to light. The patent outlines a design that places solar panels directly on the controller’s housing. These panels would capture energy and store it in a battery, providing a continuous charge as long as the controller is exposed to light.
Sony is hardly planning to build an only solar-powered PlayStation controller but it may be aiming at retaining the charge in the device’s battery in the “waiting” mode without any other power source.
It is worth noting that Sony’s latest DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers have already brought some major advancements to the table, like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
