Key points
  1. GingerOfOz, a console modder and YouTuber, created the PlayStacean.
  2. The PlayStacean is a modded PlayStation 1 console that looks like a crab with a fully functional claw controller.
  3. The PlayStation 1 was initially released in 1994.

On March 22, a console modder and YouTuber named GingerOfOz turned a PlayStation 1 (PS1) into a PlayStacean by giving it a crab-looking outer shell and a fully functioning claw controller. According to him, the inspiration came after seeing an art piece made by a Riot Games concept artist.

GingerOfOz documented his progress in a YouTube video. It included 3D printing 56 total parts, trimming the PS1 motherboard, and modding the console. The console’s disc drive was also fully functional, being able to play games stored on his discs.

At the end of the video, GingerOfOz shared his thoughts about the build that he made. According to him, the PlayStacean gave him mixed feelings. The console was too big and clunky, some mechanisms didn’t work smoothly, and the claw controllers weren’t good at all. However, despite these gripes, he said that he still really likes the console and that it gives him joy every time he sees it.

The PlayStation 1 was a console made by Sony. It was released back in 1994 and is home to classic games such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7. Its release was well-received by critics with Entertainment Weekly in 1995 calling it a “technological marvel.”

In December 2024, Sony released an Anniversary Collection themed around PlayStation One complete with the brown casing and colorful PlayStation logo to celebrate the console’s 30th anniversary. The collection contains a DualSense/DualSense Edge controller, a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console, and a PlayStation Portal. Gamers were able to purchase them separately. In addition, themes were also added to the PlayStation 5 home screen.
