Key points
  1. Overwatch 2’s recent reviews have elevated it from mostly negative to mixed.
  2. This newfound life of Overwatch 2 is thanks to its newest update, Season 15.
  3. Overwatch 2’s initial release on Steam was met with more than 100,000 negative reviews and made it the worst game on Steam.

Overwatch 2 is seeing a resurgence in player sentiment on Steam as recent reviews rose from mostly negative to mixed. The game is also seeing increased player counts thanks to its latest update, reaching a peak of more than 59,000 players on Steam on February 18.

February 18 saw the dawn of Overwatch 2’s newest season and it introduced a lot of new things to the game. However, the biggest addition is probably its perk system which is the center of all compliments from the Steam reviews. Most of the players are also saying that this is what Overwatch 2 should’ve been during its release.

Another point the players have brought up is competition. Players have realized that since Overwatch 2 has competition in Marvel Rivals, it gave the developers incentive to keep the game fresh to revitalize its dwindling playerbase. The director of Overwatch 2 has also acknowledged this, saying that the success of Marvel Rivals is welcome and that it has given the developers a reason to be more daring.

Overwatch 2’s release on Steam was a disaster. Just two days after its release on the platform, it became the worst game ever on Steam. Its release garnered 126,156 negative reviews which resulted in the game having “Mostly Negative” reviews for much of its lifetime on Steam.

Overwatch 2 was released on August 10, 2023. Blizzard initially planned for the game to have a story mode, however they backtracked on it before release which frustrated fans. This, paired with Activision Blizzard’s discrimination and sexual harassment case happening at the same time with Overwatch 2’s release has resulted in players being disappointed in the game as well as the company.
