The Elder Scrolls VI is very far from release, as explained by Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, in his interview with GQ magazine dated Nov. 10, 2025.
The sixth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, which was announced back in 2018 with a brief teaser trailer, is “still a long way off,” said Howard, also confirming that the game is in active development and is “an everyday thing.”
It is known that the project is led by Todd Howard as game director, who reprised his duties from previous games in the series as well as other games developed by Bethesda. The Elder Scrolls VI will be the second game developed on the studio’s in-house engine, Creation Engine 2, following 2023’s Starfield.
The previous official piece of news that players heard about Skyrim’s sequel was that Bethesda was auctioning the chance to create the winner’s own NPC character that will appear in The Elder Scrolls VI.
Since the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, the franchise has only expanded with the following titles:
- 2014 MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO),
- 2020 free-to-play spin-off The Elder Scrolls: Blades,
- 2023/2024 The Elder Scrolls: Castles, a mobile game with gameplay reminiscent of Fallout Shelter,
- Shadowdropped on April 22, 2025, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster.
Beyond that, the players only saw multiple re-releases of the fifth TES installment, starting with the 2013 Legendary Edition, which bundled the original game with all three DLCs, Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, for the same platforms as the original.
In 2017, the Nintendo Switch Edition launched, bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch with motion controls and outfits from The Legend of Zelda series.
Skyrim VR arrived on PlayStation VR in 2017, while the PC VR version for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality debuted in 2018.
The 2018 Special Edition was a remastered version with improved graphics, mod support on consoles, and all DLCs, expanding the game to new platforms: Windows PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
The Anniversary Edition, released in 2021 for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, marked the game’s 10th anniversary. It included the content from the Special Edition and added over 500 pieces of Creation Club content.
As for the The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster, the game reached 9 million players three months after launch.
