A remaster for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was finally revealed by Bethesda Softworks 19 years after the original release. The game is available starting now, April 22, 2025.
Oblivion’s remaster is coming to Xbox series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, bringing new quests that will uncover the Emperor’s life story as well as Daedra’s invasion background.
The game has been remade on Unreal Engine 5 by Paris-based port studio Virtuos in collaboration with Bethesda. Besides audio and visual enhancement the remake brings reworks to the HUD, menus, and map, along with an improved user interface for systems like Persuasion, Clairvoyance, and others. Core mechanics such as leveling, encumbrance, and non-combat perks have been adjusted, and enemy scaling has been refined for a better overall experience. The update also introduces enhanced accessibility features, additional autosave options, and revised camera perspectives for both first-person and third-person gameplay.
Oblivion Remake includes the original story as well as expansions The Shivering Isles and The Knights of the Nine, the Fighter’s Stronghold, Spell Tome Treasures, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower and Orrery.
The complete download size of the remastered title is 115,4 GB, while the Steam version of the original game is 20 times lighter as it is only 5.58 GB.
A Deluxe Edition of the game has also been released alongside the normal version, featuring such bonuses as extra weapons and horse armor, a nod to the horse armor DLC pack for the original game, which became a long-running meme in the gaming community.
It is worth noting that in the announcement video, Todd Howarddirector and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is in the works, saying “Obviously we’re working on the sixth chapter here, but what’s great about The Elder Scrolls is being able to look back at all of the chapters: Skyrim, Morrowind, Oblivion, Daggerfall, Arena. Each of them was a try to define role-playing games and open-world games for their generation.”
It is worth noting that as of the time of writing, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009) features an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam with 39,990 reviews.
