Key points
  1. The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been found to be not compatible with certain third-party accessories.
  2. The Verge’s sources claim that this is due to a new encryption method Nintendo has implemented on the console.
  3. The Nintendo Switch 2 was released on June 5, 2025, and has sold more than 5 million units globally.

On July 2, 2025, The Verge published a report saying that Nintendo has deliberately limited the Switch 2’s compatibility with third-party accessories. The outlet claims that the company has done this through the use of a new encryption scheme and a dedicated encryption chip.

The information came from two accessory manufacturers that were not named by the outlet. The Verge has tested the claims and has found them to be believable, as a few of their docks did not work with the console. Additionally, they also found that the Switch talks in code that Nintendo will be the only one to decipher, resulting in the dock not working.

The Verge claims that there was only one dock that worked during their testing, called the Antank S3 Max. However, they claimed that this might not be the case after a few software updates, as Nintendo can easily make that change and make the accessory obsolete.

During the Switch 1’s lifespan, there have been problems with third-party accessory makers bricking consoles due to the “implementation of USB-C connections on third party docks.” The Verge confirmed that this is not the case with the Switch 2, and it’s solely due to the new encryption technology Nintendo has implemented.

The Switch 2 is Nintendo’s latest console. It was released on June 5, 2025. A few weeks into its launch, Nintendo confirmed that the console had sold more than 5 million units globally
