Underwater combat returns in Monster Hunter Wilds as a part of the Lagiacrus fight encounter. Fighting the monster on its home turn will require hunters to swim, during which weapon functionality will be restricted.
Players must utilize environmental hazards to reign victorious against Lagiacrus, a monster that is debuting in Wilds on June 30 as a part of the upcoming free Title Update 2; Seregios is also joining the game at that point in time.
The underwater fight encounters initially debuted in Monster Hunter Tri, a title exclusive to the Wii. The mechanic made a short return in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate but had not seen a proper return to the franchise until the recent Monster Hunter Wilds announcement.
In regards to community reception, the mechanic has always been a decisive point of discussion. Some loved it and have been asking for its return, while others criticized the mechanic for its sluggish nature, arguing it disrupts combat flow.
Monster Hunter Wilds is also adding various limited-time events, according to the latest Free Title Update Roadmap:
- Festival of Accord: Flamefete (July 23 – August 6)
- Arch-tempered Uth Duna (July 30 – August 20)
- Event Quest Fender Special Collaboration: August 27 – September 24)
At the time of writing, Monster Hunter Wilds has “Overwhelmingly Negative” recent Steam reviews, with many criticizing the lack of promised optimization updates alongside the overall lack of content. The overall reviews are “Mixed.” Despite criticism, the game reached more than 1 million concurrent users on Steam and sold more than 10 million copies just a month after its release.
