Nintendo Switch 2 will require users’ phone numbers to access GameChat, the new social hub that lets groups of up to 12 people chat while playing games.
According to the company, providing a mobile number is an additional security measure required to use this feature, which enables online voice chat and gameplay streaming with friends. For users younger than 16, a parent or guardian must enable GameChat functionality.
Notably, the first version of the Nintendo Switch doesn’t require a phone number for voice chat, but a separate mobile device is still needed to talk with friends through the Nintendo Switch Online app.

The new Nintendo console will feature an exclusive release by FromSoftware, The Duskbloods. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s new game, which is coming in 2026, will be a PvPvE-focused multiplayer action title.
