Key points
  1. New tariffs of 46% for Vietnam and 49% for Cambodia could increase the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US.
  2. Moving production to Vietnam and Cambodia in 2019 was a strategic decision by Nintendo to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods.
  3. The PC gaming sector could see price hikes on such goods as PC cases and graphics cards due to a 25% tariff on aluminum.

The Nintendo Switch 2 base price of $450 may soon climb even higher for US buyers due to new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on imports from Vietnam and Cambodia, countries where, in 2019, Nintendo moved part of its hardware manufacturing.

Following the Nintendo Direct livestream dedicated to the release of Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, Trump revealed plans to impose tariffs on all goods imported into the US starting on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

The new import regulations hit particularly hard for products coming from Vietnam and Cambodia, with 46% and 49% tariffs, respectively, while the base announced tariff is 10%. These new regulations could have significant implications for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is largely assembled in these two countries. In fact, production in Vietnam and Cambodia has been a strategic decision by Nintendo to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods, which were imposed during previous trade tensions.

According to the report from Financial Times, Nintendo has already shipped hundreds of thousands of new consoles to the US from factories in Vietnam prior to the news about tariff changes.

As it is yet to be revealed how the Switch 2 console pricing, as well as new costs of Nintendo games, might be influenced by these tariffs, it is worth noting that new regulations could also ripple through the broader video gaming market. The PC gaming sector is about to see the effects of a 25% tariff that covers not only raw aluminum and steel but also finished products such as PC cases and graphics cards.

It is worth noting that new Trump regulations have also been imposed on the Australian territory of Heard and McDonald Islands. Despite the islands having no imports, exports, or human inhabitants, the United States implemented a 10% tariff against them.
